Erik Deutsch introduces you to voice leading to create great jazz accompaniments from simple chord grids!
Chords, harmony and voice leading
What makes a good jazz pianist ? Undoubtedly their ability to give life, relief, to the most elementary chord grids. The ability to choose the right harmonies, to “connect” chords to each other, is all part of what we call voice-leading. To turn you into an expert on the subject, Erik Deutsch will guide you through an extensive 3-part course. The first part focuses exclusively on voice-leading : you will learn how to use the “right” notes of the chords (the “guide tones“) in order to obtain the most fluid and musical harmonic progression possible. Then, in parts 2 and 3, Erik will show you techniques to give even more color to your jazz accompaniments, first by working on jazz rhythms (part 2), then by adding new sounds with the addition of 9th, 11th and 13th chords (part 3). To make this learning experience as useful as it is enjoyable, Erik will have you work on a vast repertoire of jazz standards, featuring legends like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and John Coltrane!
